Frequently Asked Questions
A gifted evaluation is an assessment process used to determine whether a child meets the criteria for the gifted program (AGP). These evaluations help identify students who show advanced cognitive abilities, creativity, or academic achievement compared to their peers, and who may benefit from enriched or accelerated educational opportunities. This evaluation typically includes an IQ assessment and many programs consider scores in the top 2-5% (IQ of around 130 or above) as part of the criteria.
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that looks at a child's cognitive (thinking), academic, emotional, and behavioral functioning. The purpose is to understand how someone learns, where they might be struggling, and what support they might need. It's often used to:
Identify learning disabilities (like dyslexia or dyscalculia)
Diagnose ADHD or other attention-related issues
Understand emotional or behavioral challenges affecting learning
Help create or revise Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans
Provide documentation for accommodations on standardized tests
Gifted evaluations typically take about 45-75 minutes.
Other evaluations such as evaluations for learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism can take about 1-4 hours due to multiple assessments being conducted and giving the child breaks. For these type of evaluations, multiple sessions might need to be scheduled in order to ensure the child is able to perform to the best of their ability.
For gifted evaluations, I can give you results over the phone on the same day that the testing took place. The typed report will be sent to you within 3-5 days. I will call after you receive the report to review the results of the evaluation.
For the other evaluations, the full, detailed typed report will be sent to you within 7-14 days depending on the type of evaluation and how many assessments were given. I will also provide a follow-up phone call to review the results.
The results are compiled into a detailed report that will be shared with you for you to do with it as you please. It can be used just to give you important information regarding your child or to share with the school for possible placement in a program. This report includes scores from the assessments, diagnoses (if applicable), recommendations for school and/or home, and accommodations.
